When I was in Copenhagen, I fell in love with the idea of Hygge. For the Danish, Hygge is that cozy feeling mixed with contentment and well-being. Typically associated with winter evenings by the fire with comfort food and friendships, it can take on different meanings as seasons change. For me, Hygge is really the idea of taking time to slow down and experience my home in a meaningful and relaxing way.
While I love to Hygge at night, with soft candles, wine, and a good book, I also love a slow morning. This isn’t always possible because I have to work, I have been really enjoying this mindset shift on the weekends and now that I’m working from home.
Hygge Tip #1: Make Time
These type of mornings might be hard to come by depending on your season of life. Carve out one morning a month to experience this shift and it might just become a weekly routine. Set it in your calendar, and make it happen! Waking up an hour earlier, or planning to have a slow morning on a day when you can start work a little later can also help get into this rhythm.
Tip #2: Sleep in
I find it hard to sleep in, but turning off my alarm and forcing myself to lie in bed for a few extra minutes is a nice start. I watch the morning light stream through my window and practice a bit of mindfulness with the Calm app. Catching a few more Zzzz is always a nice way to feel refreshed and peaceful.
Morning Tip #3: Food
Eating is a big part of Hygge, so cook up a delicious breakfast. This doesn’t have to be fancy, in fact stick to comfort foods. I love a great pancake stack, bacon and eggs or even some avocado toast. Take your time preparing it and enjoying it. Hygge Tip #4: Drink something cozy
Treat yourself a little! For me this is a ‘fancy coffee’ aka frothed flavored milk and coffee. This little treat is perfect along side a good breakfast. Tea, iced coffee or fresh juice are all great choices!
Tip #5: Wear Socks
Well this doesn’t have to be socks but put on something cozy and comfortable. I’ve found that slipping on an oversized sweater like this one or some joggers like this help set the mood. Comfort is key so wear what makes you feel the best. I linked up a few other cozy fall options in this post.
Morning Tip #6: Set the mood
A calming playlist like this one or even an ambiance video like this help set the mood. A crackling fire would also work wonders if you are fortunate to have one. I light a good smelling candle to help add to the vibe of my morning.
Hygge Tip #7: What do I do?
When you are starting up this routine, it might be tricky to let yourself be present and truly enjoy the lull in activity that you purposely created. If you need to have something to do, reading, yoga, journaling or mediating are all great options. Chatting with friends is another option if you have people around. If you want to get outside, take a quick walk around the block or go for a hike on a trail near you. I love reading the Bible during this time or even just journaling in my bullet journal.
